Credit Crunch Packed Lunch Causes Increase in Bread Sales!
22/07/2009 12:14It seems like more people are using their loaf (excuse the pun), and taking a packed lunch to work during the recession. According to independent retail experts TNS, bread sales increased by 0.5 per cent in the last 12 months and Tesco has reported a growth of 10% of white loaves.
It might not seem like much, but according to government figures there was a 35 per cent decline in bread sales until 2007, and an increase in other traditional packed lunch products such as Thermos mugs (up 76 per cent) and sandwich fillers (up 32 per cent) at Tescos.
A spokesperson for Tesco said "The credit crunch is unwittingly helping to revive the UK bread industry". Read more from the original Daily Mail article here.
And according to Modern Baking, it's not just the Brits that are boosting the bread industry with their packed lunches. Americans are also feeling the pinch and taking 'brown bag lunches' to work. Nationally, bread averaged $1,740 per store per week in 2008, a 14.1 percent increase from the previous year. People are also experimenting with using a greater variety of breads to spice up their lunches.
